Díaz-Canel talks at UN with presidents of Ecuador and Iran
Tuesday, 25 September 2018
United Nations - President Miguel Diaz-Canel met with his counterparts from Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, and from Iran, Hasan Rohani, as part of his tight agenda of bilateral meetings.

During the last years, Havana and Quito have strengthened relations and support cooperation programs in several areas, such as health and education.

Likewise, Cuba and Iran strengthened their cooperation in the political field and international relations, where there is a convergence, as in the field of economic development.

While this year the President of the United States, Donald Trump, intensified hostilities against Iran, the President of this country told the Cuban ambassador in Tehran that he would continue to strengthen ties of friendship with the Caribbean island.

In addition, the Iranian head of State repeatedly stated that he opposes unjust sanctions against independent nations, including Cuba.

Adding his meeting with the leaders of Ecuador and Iran, the Cuban President spoke at the UN for the first time during the Nelson Mandela Peace Summit.

According to the list of speakers disclosed in the UN, Diaz-Canel will deliver a speech in the general debate of the Assembly next Wednesday, on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of Fidel Castro's visit to the headquarters of the multilateral body.

Also on that day he will speak in the event that commemorates the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

Among the different meetings scheduled on the agenda of the Cuban head of state is expected a dialogue with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and several bilateral meetings with dignitaries from various parts of the world.

As part of the work program, the Cuban President is expected to have some meetings with U.S. businessmen, members of the Cuban community in the United States and members of the network of solidarity with the island. (PL)
